A general assessment of the piano's current condition is always performed upon arrival to the home or venue. A normal visit involves tuning the entire piano once through, key by key. Standard pitch for pianos is A-440 and the piano sounds best when it is at this level. There can be times when an instrument may not be able to handle that level, either due to poor string condition ( like rust) or a support structure which has a problem with glue joints are a couple examples.
Minor repairs such as a swollen key becoming sluggish or adjusting the pedals, a squeak in a note which involves no removal of the action is also included. The piano is checked for any problems that may have developed and a plan for its correction is laid out.
A pitch correction is needed when piano has not been maintained on a schedule (ie. being tuned annually or bi-annually). When given the opportunity, the tension and stress on the piano's structure will not go out of tune the same across the board. Usually the pitch will have dropped and the entire piano needs and additional full tuning during the same visit. In this instance just how well the piano handled the increase in tension would govern when the next normal follow up tuning should be completed. There are times when a piano has become older and the wood parts or structure just does not function as it should. Not holding a tuning due to weakness in the pin-block, splits in the soundboard that have started to buzz or a mechanism which becomes difficult to play are but few possibilities.
